Many of our adult students engage with Abriendo Mentes to develop skills that will serve them in the workplace. Whether they are just learning to say “hello” or are perfecting their pronunciation after years of practice, our adult students view learning English as a pathway to steady, well-paid employment in a region where tourism has quickly become the dominant industry. While a basic command of English is nearly requisite in the local job market, employees with advanced computer skills are highly sought after and are eligible for many management level positions. Our computer classes for adults offer the navigational skills needed to keep stride with recent technology.
Our Women’s Group activities also fall under our adult programming. This social branch of our adult programming features a handbag sewing initiative, which offers an engaging, collective space for the women of Potrero to learn an artistic skill and provides an avenue to increase household income.
We have been offering conversational English classes since 2011. We offer group classes, private lessons, and language exchanges or intercambios. Classes are highly specialized and are tailored to fit the skill level and interests of our students. Under the direction of our Adult English Coordinator, classes are taught by volunteers from around the world.
Abriendo Mentes offers periodic vocational trainings, covering varied topics such as sewing courses, aesthetician training for women, and artisan skills.

Abriendo Mentes offers free computer classes to adults in Potrero. Classes focus on teaching adults basic computing skills including typing, internet navigation, and Microsoft Office products. Most classes are taught in a group setting. Specialty workshops are offered on occasion.
Our technology lab features seven computers, two multi-function printers and an LCD projector that were generously donated to Abriendo Mentes. The lab is a unique resource for printing and copying, as well as basic internet access, for many of our participants.
MAP is a featured community project of Abriendo Mentes. This initiative started from humble beginnings, with one sewing machine shared by six women who learned to design and sew handbags using newspapers and old curtains. MAP has since evolved into an ever-growing social enterprise. A group of advanced seamstresses collectively design and create handbags which are sold in The Shop in Potrero and other local tourist venues. All of the bags are unique, handmade, and are often created from recycled materials. In late 2013, we invited other local artisans to begin to sell their wares in The Shop as well. Visit the MAP page to learn more about this fantastic group of local women. Aquí puede encontrar mas información en español.
